A fully fledged Melbournian...
Today, I became a Fully Fledged Melbournian.
After spending the majority of my life in the Aussie Rules mad city - I finally made it to my first game.
Essendon vs St Kilda. We'd been given some free tickets to the Medallion club - which meant nice seats and lotsa security.
Twas at the Telstra dome with the roof closed - thank goodness because it was raining and only 16 degrees outside.
With a strong 45,000 crowd the atmosphere is amazing. The roar when a team gets a goal, or when a bad player gets booed or when everyone starts to sing to their club's tunes - something that you just cannot appreciate on TV no matter how expensive a plasma TV it is.
Plus we saw a few intersting things never noted on TV
.... never notic
ed how many non-players are on the field on TV.
.... There were these four or so guys in flourcent yellow clothing who kept bolting on and off the field - Runners' whos job is to send the coaches messages to the players on the field, or to tell them he's coming off for another player.
What a job?!

.... Also these people who's sole job is to again bolt onto the field to give the players who are standing around (eg/ goal being kicked at other end), water to drink and a towel.
.... There was a decent amount of pushing/shoving/clothes pulling/ elbowing/ nudging etc with the players on the other end of the field whilst the ball was being played on the other side. No wonder they get so Agro when the balls actually in their field!! Payback time!!
.... These footy players are REALLY fit - you can truly appreciate it when you see they run at full speed on and off the field. They're also built like a bull - the number of knocks they get is phenomenal... I dont think I could walk for a month after one of the knocks they get...
So Essendon won and it was a good game - except for the last 10 min when they were just kicking to each other to buy time. The whole stadium booooooed for a long time - the crowd's just amazing.
Lotsa fun - now must get myself to the Grand Prix one day...

hm... everyone's looking up, but where's the ball?
